use a proper knife

loss is not always so concise
so precisely severed
by sharpened words
and shrill retorts
and allegations
that beggar belief

loss might crawl between you
insidious and still
the expanding space
on the couch
the dulling patter
the silent bed

loss should never be so easy
so effortlessly attained
I’d much rather
you screamed at me
cracked open my skull
crushed my heart

if I must be cut away from you,
then for God’s sake,
use a proper knife

  1. wow this is really good! i love the second stanza here, it describes how loss can show up and sort of swallow the space, most suddenly, in our daily lives in a very intimate and lovely manner.
” loss might crawl between you

    the expanding space
    on the couch
    the dulling patter
    the silent bed”.
This also reminds me of a really really great show my my wife’s theatre ran back in 2018, “How to use a Knife”
